The gallery what I chose to visit was No Redemption Value by Maccabee Shelley. I want to talk a little about what I did and what I saw at the gallery. While looking through the artwork, I saw a lot of different glass bottle melted together that formed different shapes. The colors from the different glass bottles gave a beautiful look to the art piece. There was no real distinct shape that was formed, but it had an interesting design. The artwork did not look like it was made out of glass bottles, but by minerals and rocks that you would find on earth. I was amazed as to what one can do by melting and fusing glass bottles together.
According to Maccabee Shelley, it took him about 8-9 months to complete all his glass bottle artwork. He had to be extremely careful when handling the art pieces because it was heavy and if it dropped, he could get injured. He even had to go and learn how to carry his artwork without injuring his back. During his time working on the artworks, the skin on his hand would peel from dealing with the glass bottles. A lot of time was spent getting bottles, molding the melted bottles, and transporting his artwork. I could tell that Maccabee put in a lot of effort to create all his artworks. Geology, the Earth, the Ocean, and Astronomy could be said to be the inspiration for his work.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw Maccabee’s glass sculptures was an image of a whole new “world”. When I saw the sculpture, it looked like a landscape that you would see in a fantasy type setting. I felt like it was a piece of land on a different planet. It is probably not suppose to be about a different world, but to me, that is what I see. I felt like my imagination was running wild when I was looking at the sculptures. One of my favorite piece is the sculpture of two cylinder shaped towers on top of a platform. In my eyes, I see two hollow trees that you would find somewhere out in space. What I like about art is the different perspective that it gives people. The art sculpture can mean different things depending on the individual. When I told my classmate, Brandon Hamada, what I see when I look at the sculpture, he was surprised that it could be seen as trees on a different planet. I really like the sculpture because it sparked my imagination. It is amazing that a sculpture that is made out of glass bottles, something that people usually recycle or throw away, is able to become such a beautiful piece of work.
