My Interview for week 15 is Marina Barnes.
Marina is a freshman who is studying Film at CSULB. During our interview, she did a video interview instead of the usual note taking interview. She was the first one that I met that did a video interview. I asked her what she thought about the ART class so far and she said that she likes going to the galleries. The course was a required class for her major and because of the ART-110 class, she now knows that there is an art gallery on campus. Before she took the class, she did not know that our school had an art gallery.
Marina wanted to be a film major because it was something that she was interested in. Her uncle works with film and he inspired her to become a film major. Her uncle did not have a daughter of his own and his sons were not interested in film, so he treated Marina as if she was his own daughter. He would try and show her the world of filming and because she was interested, she decided to becoming a film major going into college. Marina does not really have any hobbies at the moment. She use to sail a lot and plan to join the sailing team next year, but recently she has not been doing much. She even said that she was embarrassed of her lack of hobbies.
Unfortunately I forgot to get a picture of her during the interview, so here is a picture of a yogurt.
My classmate interview for week 13 is Prem Muni.
Prem is currently a Sophomore studying Computer Science. We started the conversation about our major and what classes we were taking. We both talked about the different professors for the engineering department for most of the duration. I asked him if he likes the major so far. He said that he likes it even though he finds it very difficult. I am in the same situation when it comes to being in a major like Computer Engineering/Computer Science. Even though it is difficult, it is something that we like to do and enjoy learning.
Some hobbies that Prem likes to do is play basketball. He loves to play basketball and use to play it a lot with his friends. Unfortunately he does not play anymore ever since he started college. He does not have time nor have people he can go play with. The same goes with playing video games. Prem use to play video games as well, but now he does not play as much because of limited free time. We then talked about our favorite food that we like. I didn’t have just one favorite food, but I liked mango. Prem said that his favorite food is chocolate chip ice cream or any ice cream for that matter.
My classmate interview for week 12 is Jerrell Howell.
While talking to Jerrell Howell I learned a lot of interesting things about him. From our conversation I learned that he is the youngest of 3 and the first one to go to college out of his family. He is from Fontana and has been living there for 12 years. He likes to play baseball and he is an angel fan. He grew up playing baseball and he has been playing baseball for 13 years .He is very passionate about baseball. He came from summit high school in Fontana and he was an honor roll student.
Jerrell Howell is currently a second year at Cal State Long beach and is a health care Administration major. He told me that he wanted to find a way to help people and with much thought, decided to be a part of health care. Jerrell plans to go to the Air force after college. He said he wants to go so he can travel the world and to help his family in the long run. He wants to create his own brand or become a model for a brand. He is very goal oriented and a go getter type of person.
Jerrell wants a lot in life, for him and his family. He hopes he can take care of his parents once he gets a career. He is a family oriented person and he wants nothing but the best for them. Jerrell is pretty cool person. I hope he is able to accomplish all of his dreams. I hope he accomplishes his goals.
My artist interview for week 9 is Michael Rollins. Rollins’s artwork, in my eyes, are composed of different brush strokes on a canvas. His work looks like a mixture of different strokes with different colors because when he paints, he does not have any reverence material. So when he is painting, he does not have a set rule as to what he is allowed to to paint. This way he has the freedom and directness to paint what he feels like painting. Instinctive painting is what Rollins’s art is about. He just paints without having any restrictions to hold him back. With not only Instinctive painting, he also incorporates formal decision making. He uses Instinctive painting to express his personality while using formal decisions to connect something together.
When he starts painting, he would experiment with his works. After a lot of experimenting and looking through his work, he would then find a starting point and style that he wants. Rollins has always had art in his life. Before being an artist, he was majoring in illustration at an art school. The reason why he was an illustration major was because he was afraid of the risk and uncertainty of being an artist. One day he say an artist himself, and was inspired to take the risk and become an artist. Being an artist brought him a lot of freedom in his life. He does not care about things and just does what he wants. Sometimes being an artist and working on your artwork requires you to sacrifice time with others.
In my opinion, I liked the mixture of different colors, but as for understanding art, I have trouble understanding the artwork. All I see are paint strokes on a canvas. I like it, but I don’t really understand the meaning. The only one who knows the true meaning is the artist himself.
My classmate interview for week 9 is Khoi Nguyen.
Khoi is a student at CSULB who is currently majoring in Civil Engineering. He currently lives in Anaheim somewhere near Disneyland! I asked him why he chose to attend CSULB, he said that it was because it was close to home and he had always wanted to go to this school. The reason he chose Civil Engineering was because he likes to deal with houses, buildings, bridges, and other structures. I also asked him about what he thought about ART-110 and he said it was a chill class. He likes art, so he enjoys the time during the art gallery on Thursdays.
Khoi also likes video games like CS:GO. He likes to play shooting or games that is first person. He enjoys playing different types of sports like basketball, badminton, and swimming. He has been to my home city, ARCADIA because he said that he has been to the 626 night market at the Santa Anita race track. He said that he would go every year, but except last year because he was busy and was not able to make it. Khoi is also part of this business club on campus and was able to make more friends because of it. He use to have trouble making friends cause he “was kind of a loner,” so it helped him connect with other. They also thought him how to communicate with others.
My artist interview for week 7 is Juliette Angulo.
Juliette’s art involves pictures of her sister except she is cut out of the image. Juliette has a younger sister who joined the military. Her sister is a Mechanical engineer who fix Apache helicopters for the army. Juliette’s sister was a big part of her life so when she enlisted to the army, she lost someone important. She said although she still talks to her via message or Skype, it felt weird not being able to spend time with her being physically there. Her sister lives on a base in El Paso, Texas and is on a trip to Kuwait. Her sister just turned 21 and will be on the trip for roughly 9 months.
Juliette’s art involves the use of her sister. She is trying to convey a message of how her sister joining the military caused her pain and loneliness. her art has pictures that she took of her sister. She cut an outline of her sister out to show how she is missing from her life. Aside from her art with photography, she is currently working with metals for her artwork. I don’t have anyone in my family who is enlisted in the military so I can not imagine how it must of felt. It is good that her sister will be coming back some times in July or August.
I thought her artwork was pretty interesting. Even though she just cut a picture, it leaves a huge impression on the audience. It is simple, yet has a big meaning to it.
My interview for week 7 is Rogelio Avina.
Rogelio is a Civil Engineer who is currently a Sophomore. It is interesting how of all the people I have interview for an ART course, most of them are engineers…well anyways…Rogelio is a student who is currently living at Parkside in building Q on campus. Even though his home is in Lancaster, a 2 hour drive, he goes home every 2-3 weeks. When I asked him if he liked his major in Civil, he said that he does. He likes Civil Engineering, but says it if very difficult, especially when it involves learning high leveled mathematics.
When he was in high school, he was in Track and Field, and Soccer. I though it was impressive to be in two teams in high school. It is not easy having to train and practice for two different sports. When we look at the gallery for art, he says that the ones he likes involve detailed art of environments. He likes to visit Mexico whenever he is on summer or winter break. Some places he visited were Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tijuana, Erendira, and Ensenda.
Also he likes the color red.
